If we ever needed a reminder of nature’s all-encompassing power, it’s now. The rambling terrains of Sydney-based artist Elaine Foulsham are a gentle call for us to recognise the vast and diverse natural world we persistently attempt to curate. Devoid of human representation, her layered acrylic and mixed media paintings focus on the energy transferred between nature and ourselves. The undulating terrains of open fields, rugged land and coastal areas are translated with awe and sincerity onto her canvases which she paints intuitively from her garden studio. She says, ‘At times I feel a certainty for what I wish to achieve before I begin and other times I just let the image talk to me as it unfolds’. The more you gaze at Elaine’s vast landscapes, the more you get lost in their visceral energy.
