Tanya Zhivanovich

Born in the UK Tanya has been living and working in Sydney for the last fifteen years, obtaining a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the National Art School in 2009.

Inspired by the unique landscapes, coastline and wildlife in Australia and working from a mixture of photography and sketches, Tanya seeks to create thought provoking works by constructing compositions that have a message, meaning or nostalgic sense of place.

Tanya’s paintings and drawings are a combination of motif, illustration and layering of mediums and mark making, creating juxtapositions between expressive watercolour washes and the considered marks of a fine line pen or thin paint brush. Colours pop through from behind the detailed patterns and marks, akin to looking through the Australian bush. Line work is unable to be erased once the pen or painted drawing has begun, resulting in a considered and mediative style of working.

Tanya has been inspired by both her English heritage and the Australian culture bringing together a mix of influences, such as the English textiles designer William Morris and Australian painter Kathyrn Del Barton. Tanya seeks to develop a rich visual language using layering and patterns, adding more depth to the narrative of her compositions.
